Episode 9 — St. Clare of Assisi

An icon of St. Clare of Assisi (1194-1253)

Feast day: August 11 Patron saint of television, eye disease, goldsmiths, laundry

This week, I have another saint to introduce you today from the Sisterhood of Saints: St. Clare of Assisi.

For those who don’t know, my full name is Rachel Clare Wong. I always thought that my middle name was a tribute to St. Clare of Assisi. As a kid, I really liked this because I knew from a comic book that I read about her that St. Clare was the patron saint of television (among other things). Like any kid, I loved watching TV, and eventually I became really interested in media, so it seemed like a perfect fit.

While the story behind why my parents decided to give me the name Clare isn’t quite like that, I always held a very special connection to St. Clare. I learned a lot about her recently in a visit that I made to the St. Clare’s Monastery in Mission, BC, which is part of the Archdiocese of Vancouver. Talking with the sisters, who live just like St. Clare and her companions did centuries ago, was quite eye-opening for me.
